AR's in 7.62x39
« on: April 04, 2007, 05:18:55 PM »
i was looking at shotgun news awhile back and saw an ad for converting an AR from 5.56 to 7.62x39 and using AK magazines, Is there any good reason for this? what kind of reliability will you get,any detriments to accuaracy? it looked interesting anyhow

I am no black gun expert - but, when 7.62x39 was cheep, I could see the interest in such a chambered gun.
But at todays prices - Why??  Its not going to increase accuracy above that of the 5.56. It will make the gun heavier etc....
I do not see any advantage-Maybe some of the black gun experts can help us?

I consider it an oddity, not something that anybody ever really caught on to.  IIRC they called it the AR47.  It was a neat idea, I guess.  The ergonomics of the AR15 with the increased power of the 7.62x39.  The only appeal I see is that it's a step up in caliber.  And the ergonomics are a little better than an AK.

I've never fired one, so I don't know how the accuracy is.  I'm sure it would be fun to shoot.  But probably not something I'd ever consider spending money on.

The 7.62x39 AR has a bad habit of breaking bolts. The rock and lock of AK mags seems out of place in the AR. C-Products is debuting an AR mag for standard lowers in this caliber.

I can't for the life of me find the webpage I saw it on, but there's a company out there that designed and built a custom receiver *specifically* for use with AK mags, and mated it to a completed 7.62x39 upper.  A couple of other boards I've read have had a few people who've tried these out, and they say that it doesn't seem to have the trouble of the AR-15's with the 7.62 uppers, most specifically how you don't need to use a special magazine.

Total cost for the whole rifle was just at $1,200, and this included a CAR style adjustable stock, and I believe the SAW style pistol grip.  The upper that was shown was the flattop, so you could use it with optics or one of the optional carry handles.  I want to say the upper was also manufactured specially for this rifle, but I may be mistaken and it's just a standard "conversion" upper.

As for why anyone would want one, I'll use myself as an example.  I like the style and design of the AR-15, but I already own a few rifles that use 7.62x39, and therefor have a lot of ammo in that size already.  IMHO, it would be pretty much the best of both worlds, having an AR that can use the same ammo as my SKS and AK's.

The one I saw in SGN had interchangable magwells on the lower receiver. You would knock out a few pins and convert it from AR style mags to AK mags.
It was a neat concept, being modular and all, but the price turned me off real quick. For what they were asking, I could buy an AR chambered in 5.56 and an AR chambered in 7.62.

The web site of the company is listed as:

MGI@adelphia.net

It does not appear up at this time.

The ad is on page 12 of the current SGN.

Yeah, Its a company up here in Maine i just found the AD in shotgun news, I'll have to go to Bangor sometime and see one first hand,I'm only about 2 hours from there. 1,200 dollars is alot of money, i would really have to consider something else, like another M1A for that kind of money i need something with alot more 'bang'
