Hot Shot 7.62x39

I know nothing about this ammo but I was looking at aimsurplus.com and they had it on sale, not a huge sale.  Low and behold a week later the local gun store has some of it so I grabbed a few boxes to try it out.

Garbage ammo in my short lived experience with it.  Rifle just did not want to cycle well with it (have never have a problem with that before with my Yugo SKS), and lots of shells jammed up.

Went out again earlier today and I wanted to get rid of the rest of that and this time I even noticed a very potent strange smell right from the first shot.  Nothing like I've ever smelled before after firing my SKS after its been well cleaned.

Anyone else have opinions on this ammo?

I have used abot a dozen boxes and have found it to be a little hot but the most reliable ammo I have ever used. Never had a failure in the bullets

I have always fired it through a Norinco, maybe thats the difference?

Possibly?  I have a Yugo... N is the prefix on the serial, '73? or '78?  Something along those lines.

Actually the only other brand I have shot is wolf, but with Wolf I've shot FMJ, HP and SP.

I had cycling problems before but that was the gas valve.  Fixed that up and haven't had a problem since.  Nothing has ever had the trouble ejecting the shells like this hot shot stuff. Maybe 1 in 5 gets jammed up. 

Maybe theres some miniscule difference in the shells that my extractor doesn't like?

The Golden Tiger ammo isn't that bad either! I lived on the wolf ammo for years until i got introduced to this ammo and i noticed that it is cleaner than the wolf! I've compared both of them in my Yugo and the gas rod wasn't as nearly as dirty as me shooting the wolf ammo!

Did you clean your chamber out and was your wolf polymer coated? This stuff might be laquer coated... I havent broken open a tin of it yet. If it is... get yourself a 40 or 45 cal bore brush and goto town on your chamber. You could have a buildup in there.

Soon as my paycheck rolls around, I'm gonna pick me up some.  Just had to break into my last case of Brown Bear  and I can't stand having so little ammo.

Danjal --  Like M@D H@TTER said, the hot shot is def. laquer coated.  The wolf I shot didn't have anything on it.

I've already spend endless time cleaning and scrubbing the champer and the gas valve, the whole gas system.  Everything is just about as immaculate as I can get it.  I think I'm just going to have to pick up a few more boxes of that and see what happens.

I bought 1400rds of HotShot for longterm storage in the spam cans.  I picked up a few loose boxes yesterday at a gun show to have to try out.  Right now I'm a few boxes into a 1000rd case of Golden Tiger.

Be sure to let us know how they shoot!  I'd feel better if theres someone out there that shares my problem with this apparently otherwise quality ammo.

I buy the Hot Shot in the spam cans allot, and have poured 1000's of rounds out of both AK-47's and several SKS. with zero Failures. Maybe your have an issue with your SKS ? check for gas leaks and try a GOOD clean and lube.

Done and done, I haven't had this problem with other ammo (wolf pretty much).

I, too, am looking into Hot Shot for some cheap range ammo.  Local shop here has 700rnd spamcan for $99.  Save my Wolf SP for the deer.
