My old shop teacher used to tell me,
"Anything is better than nothing".
He would use this in reference to lubricating oil for machines.
Depending on the climate where you live, you'll find that some oils work better than others.
Some have said that rem oil evaporates, leaving the rifle unprotected.
I've never had any trouble, not matter what type of oil I've used
but I'm in an area that's dry a good part of the year.
I'm sure that in the more hot/humid climates, the heavier and more vicious oils work the best.
As of late, I've been using some synthetic gun oil and man, it more than does the job for my area. It's even hard to get it all off months later if I want to degrease a part to do some bluing.
You'll just have to try some things and see what works best for you.
