Does Tapco's "Plus 5" Follower Work in a 20 Round Mag?
« on: January 22, 2009, 09:36:28 PM »
Just that.

If I were to replace the follower in say, a Hungarian 20 round steel mag, with the plus five follower, would the magazine remain reliable?

Me, too. I'm new to AK's and wanting to learn.

It's a US made follower that's also a bit shorter (height-wise of course) than the original

So does the shorter follower allow more rounds in the mag, or what?

Yes, Tapco makes the shorter follower and Benny sells them:

Or you can trim the original follower yourself.

Yeah.

I'd offer that you have to take some care where you cut these. There are resistence welds that tack together the 2 piece follower body...they vary a bit in location.

You have to take care that there is enough of them that will remain on the shortened follower to keep it together.

The short mag folllower is the same follower that comes with the chinese hi-caps, so you can eyeball whatever you have and select the best "donor".

Only thing is those Tapco followers turn a good magazine into one that doesn't feed well at all. Tried one and threw it away. It was worthless for me.

Bah, I was thinking of buying a bunch of these for 922r compliance.

Do the "normal" ones have the same reliability issues as the +5 ones?

No, not really. They seem reliable.

The follower in  5 round metal milspec-ish mag is the SAME follower that is in the hi-cap mag...no difference.

The metal 10 round mags have the follower shortened -this works, but you are pushing some perimeters here. OVER shorten a follower and it can become prone to upsetting.

The short AK metal mags imported do just fine. This is not always the case of mags guys have returned to 10 round cap from their original 5 round cap.

I have not been shy about playing with them, but that's me.

Thanks for the info, LG. Hmm, maybe I'll just buy a dozen or so. Worst case scenario, I'm down $30 bucks.
