What does a Norinco SKS Hunter look like?
« on: May 30, 2009, 06:48:00 AM »
I think I picked up a Norinco Hunter this week. But I'm not sure. It's CIA marked, and has no bayonet lug,or cleaning rod. But does have the flush 5 shot mag. It is from a weird triangle marked factory.

EDIT to fix my false assumption on my initial reply

Does it look like a AK or a SKS? I handled a SKS Norinco hunter at a gun show this year.  If a SKS, then according to what another SKSer's have said, it's something of a rarity among imported SKS's. Consider yourself lucky!:) I liked how it was very light to hold and handle, compared to it's unmodified, military cousins. It should make a great brush gun.

here's a thread with some good pics of a poly tech sks hunter.

yours does not sound like a hunter. hunters did not have a triangle code on them. sounds more like a late import neutered as to be considered a sporting weapon and not a battle rifle.

as for the 5 round mag, there were 5 round mags available that replaced the original mag. sorry about the pic quality.

No big deal. It's a nice handling SKS anyways, and still full of cosmo. Once I get it cleaned up I'll keep it as a shooter. Paid a whopping $125 in beaver bucks out the door.

Got one of those wierd ones too, Woodbeef.

This Para came with a lug, but no bayo, /636\ code, five round fixed mag, painted front sight and cheap scope.  The guy I bought it from said he purchased it new in that configuration in the 1990's.  Oh, and he made a $10 profit.  Cost me a whopping $145 in March.

.... and he had this meager (grin) M59 for $200.  It was a good day.

I figured out the Factory Code with a bit of help from Mr Bearse. It's a 6656,with a 2500XXX serial number. Yes a 2 million number.

Martin,I guess the variations of these never end,do they?

Mine is nowhere near a Poly Hunter, as I could find a ten round mag, slap on a bayo with rod, put on a stock receiver cover and have a plain /636\ Paratrooper.  The true Poly Hunter has a whole set up of its own, especially where the stock, rear sight, and (no) bayo lug is concerned.

But it's interesting to know that mine was bought NIB as it is set up.  The guy said he tried it out and couldn't zero the scope (go figure!), so it just sat in his closet for 15 years.  I can't zero the scope either, cheap mount.  I also can't group for crap with the irons on it, 7MOA.  So, when all is said and done, my 2.5 MOA beater Romy will probably be my "Hunter"!

I really like the way this one handles. Night and day difference to my 636 in the 25 mill range.
