How the tilting bolt works
« on: November 24, 2009, 02:15:20 PM »
Someone suggested I start a thread about this, so for those of you who are wondering how the tilting bolt works I did this little diagram thingy in MS paint a little while ago.  It is by no means dimensionally accurate, but it does convey the concept.  Notice how in #1 and 2, the bolt is dropped down into the well and the bolt carrier slides over and traps the bolt inside the well.  Then in #3, 4 and 5, the bolt has tilted up out of the well, slid back to eject and then tilts forward to scoop the next round into the chamber.

This is why I enjoy technology. I will be honest, I have never thought about this before. But seeing it is really cool.

Wow.
Being new to this forum, and especially SKS's, I wondered how all those pieces resulted in a boom.  I'm learning so much about firearms and the SKS, and I want to say thank you for putting this together.

Nice, Mr. Wizard.  Now I know it's a tilting bolt and how it works.

"Bump!"
I used to wonder how the gas piston extension rod could not get in the way of the extracted casing;  it must kick the bolt carrier back lightning fast and return to hiding before the casing is ejected.  Wow.
thx for that graphic!
