opinions on the best aks, what to look for?
« on: January 15, 2010, 03:23:36 PM »
so I am in the market for an AK or a Mak 90
(I actually prefer the thumbhole stock )
I had a norinco Mak that I regret the heck out of selling but the new owner has no interest in getting rid of it so the search begins.

What are the main diffs between a Mak and an AK?
Which is better/preffered? and why?

what country and years were considered the best ones, accuracy reliability etc.
I currently have a russian sks that might be of some value and am debating wether to sell it if it is valuable and then buy the ak/mak or keep it and if it is truly needed then just shoot it in addition to the new rifle.

thanks

The MAK-90 is a good AK variant just the Chinese version.
I have a post ban sporter with the thumbhole stock I picked up at a show over the summer.
There are many AK clones out there Yugo's, Romanian, Polish, some are better built then others
but to me they all seem to function the same. I actually prefer my cheapo Romanian over my MAK-90.

I am also for keeping the Russian SKS, a good one is a chore to find for a decent price these day's.

If you like Mak's, and thumbhole stocks, look for an NHM.  They have a much more user-friendly thumbhole cut-out.

If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything; really helps when you get old.

It's really a matter of choice. you can't lose buying a russian or other euro rifle, on the other hand, I love my mak90....maybe it will boil down to price for you. Go to a local gun shop and start pricing...then a local gun show and see the difference in price and variety of rifles. the ak was built to last ....millions of satifies customers and still going strong.

Norinco or Polytech. These are the best. If you can handle the extra weight go with a heavy barrel rpk version like the nhm91.

I would have to consider one of these polish milled AK's.

Best AK imo is a saiga that has been converted. Russian manufacture and new not a surplus.

That's an interesting choice...I was kind of thinking along the same lines. It also appears that the Russians are figuring out that there's a BIG market for upgrades to furniture and parts, we'll have to wait and see....

If you want a thumb holer and the best you can buy, an SLR 95 is the one. If you can find one they are Bulgarian milled receivers with a Steyr hammer forged barrel.
