Constructing VZ58 mag-ed reciever *Sneek Peek*
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:55:38 AM »
Hi folks, Fitting this project in with the rest of life is much slower than I would like but hey, a pair of teenagers will evaporate your "free" time quicker than you can spit!
Any way what you see in this shot is a lower frame centering jig mounted on a reciever. every move on the fitting of new parts has to be set up in fixtures so subseqent guns can be accurately assembled into tight and true tolerances. The VZ mags demand a new style bolt stop some what similar to the FAL. The main new feature of the new XT will be a steel mag well cover that will automaticaly un latch once the lower frame is removed, alowing the mag catch pin to be hand removable along with the bolt stop assembly. This reciever group will completely strip down & reassemble (w/no tools) so fast it will make your head spin! Any one in the need of 4140 steel should try speedymetals.com great prices n fast service.
Also, a buddy of mine just got his FFL& gunsmithing license. there may come a time this year where you could mail him your poor condition SKS and recieve a new (922r compliant) very limited production XT-M1C. And I don't mind using your surplus FAL lower parts. The pat.Pending now covers it going public.

As the saying gos about what pictures are worth,... Heres where the unit stands right now. Its a bit complicated but Im rough spec-ing it out as I go. The hold open pin is a off set post that does not have its pad on the end yet. Also a mag well cover is next to be made. By hand, the hold open works fine. The last photo shows just how compact this reciever is once you take the fat wood off of it.

What's the deal with the coloring on the SKS receiver? Just raw steel with the bluing removed?

Thanks Guys,
So far so good, The reciever is a "bit" pitted on the right side and sand blasted as you can see. I figured Id use the worst one I had to experiment on but the bake on enamel is supposed to fill irregulaities in the surface to some degree. The feed angle is slightly better than the AK maged XT-M1c prototype but there is way, way more machineing involed to get the VZ to work. It may end up being a hi end option over AK mags off the future options list. The next shot will be a completed QD mag well blending in with the lower FCG.
 Stay tuned

Not sure I understand how that hold-open is working, but I'm certainly NOT going to question you on it... :)   I've seen too much, and know that I am under-experienced and just haven't figured it out yet...

So today, while you are metal working that receiver, I will be making a custom wood PG to fit an extra chinese stock I have...  I just hope my woodworking skills are even in the same country as your metal skills!

Hi folks, Thanks for all the great comments. I have constructed the Mag well cover And it turned out better than I had imagined! The cover simply lifts off the reciever once the FAL lower is removed VIA the take down lever. I wanted to have the magazine latch & bolt hold open capable of disassembly with out tools in seconds and this fits the bill perfectly. The mag well & lower FCG all lock up tight as a drum and the mag goes in easy and locks up rock solid with a nice "snap" sound of the latch locking up. Part of the Pat. Pending design is the "C" bushing the lower frame locks into. The welded in pivot pin has been milled flat on top and bottom to match slot in the "C" bushing thats welded on the reciever. This way, once the frame is pivoted up into the locked possition, the pivot pin makes a verticle and lateral "no movement" lock up at mid reciever. Also, the pivot pin, once in the C bushing, kicks the mag well cover hook foward to lock down the mag well cover VIA the cover cros pin.
Next will be the QD butt stock system. FAL solid or TAPCO side folder change over in mere seconds.... 8)

All I can say is this build is too awesome!!  Are you intending to mass produce this receiver?  If so, what do you think would be your price point?

Sorry - side question - what would have caused that terrible pitting on your original receiver?

In a few years I hope to be back in business to where I can build these Hybrids for folks that would want one. Cost is not nailed down as these are still not spected out by drawing & build times have not been established.
This was the worst reciever I had to use as another test unit. I have no idea how it became pitted on the one side only.
I love the challenge of building this sort of thing and appreciate the enthusiasm you and all the other SKS'ers here have shown for my tinkering! Even the traditionalists have been mum so I guess im doing something right even in the extreme sense! This about wraps up any further VZ58 magazine mod shots. The next posting will be this action in all its custom glory. Many bells & whistles + range results.
