Replacing SKS Mag Latch
(1/1)
7.39x39:
Hi,
I just added a detachable mag to my Russian SKS. The current mag latch is small & difficult to use. My question is: How difficult is it to replace the latch with the larger zytel sks latches offered by many companies? I do not want to completely disassemable the trigger assembly just to get at the latch.
Any experience out there?
Thanks in advance for your help.
LSPAN2K:
You have to remove the pin that passes in front of the mag catch. This is also the pin that seats into the notches on the stock fixed magazine. The pin can be a real bear ti get out. I have tried to remove mine but I am afraid of damaging the pin. I have heard tales of folks having to clamp them in a vise and twisting the trigger group around to get the pin loosened up enough to drive out, but I figured it wasn't worth all that.
Also, I have read of the plastic replacement catches don't hold up very well. I am going to try a suggestion I read somewhere else in the board - clamp on a hammer extension to the existing catch! I've got one on a Marlin lever action that I'm not using anyway, so I'll try that.
Hope this helps.
Fragger:
The pin that must be removed is the same one that holds the sear spring and sear in place. This pin runs from one side of the TG frame thru the other side. The trick here is to find something to sandwhich in between the frame. Thus when the pin is being drifted out the frame will not collapse. If the frame is allowed to collapse it will pinch the pin making it tougher to remove and may also pinch the sear so that it will not freely move. If the sear 'hangs up'' the gun will want to take off running next time you pull the trigger.
Again I'd suggest for you to find something made of metal to sandwhich between the frame when you drift out the sear ret. pin.
