As you guys know, I've got the mag adapter. The G1 was the first offering and came in 2 styles. One for the polymer stocks and the other for the wooden stocks. Then we came up with the G3/1 which basically obsoleted the G1. The difference between the 2 was the G3 eliminated the need to "cross-pin" the adapter in place. Some of you guys wanted the adapter, but didn't want to drill the stock for the cross-pin. So we fixed that objection.
I contacted Nick and he is interested in the adapter for his stock. He graciously sent me a stock to work with. Because the approach angle of the mag is sharper with the adapter, the pistol grip sorta gets in the way. While it will work, it isn't "snap easy" to install the mag. We are in the final steps of the G5/1 adapter that will have a release "lever" on it that will let you drop the mag almost vertically out. The way it works is you pull the lever, tip the front of the mag down/backwards slightly, so the front of the mag clears the mag well, then push down/forward on the mag to take it out. The pistol grip is NOT now part of the equation. It also allows vertical insertion like an AR or M14. No rock-n-lock necessary. just push it straight up/in, KACHUNK, locked in place. Here's the dilemma, the COST of the G5/1. The retail cost is probably going to be around 80.00, maybe 90.00 depending on my production costs to make it. More parts, more CNC cutting, etc, drives the production cost up.
While the G5/1 is being developed for the Shernic, it WILL work on ANY of the non AK accepting mag SKS rifles. And all the mags will work with any of the 3 adapters.
Another issue is the install of the G5/1, while not difficult, is more labor intensive. The G1 is drop it in place, drill the hole, insert pin, 5 mins you are done. With the G5, you need to cut some of the barrel washer out to make room for the locking piece on the adapter. Easily done with a Dremel, but not everybody has a Dremel. Plus you will need to mark the washer with the proper measurements. If Nick made a special purpose washer, that would go a long way to simplifying the process of the G5 install. I don't know if he will.
Question: If you were going to go with "DBL" and the Shernic stock, would you get the original G1 (50.00) with the simple cross-pin install or spend the extra money (80-90.00) and get the G5/1 with the extra install issues, but with the easier load and release? I used a G1 on the Shernic and it was very easy to install. But you still have the pistol grip issue.
Thanks guys.
