wasr mag woes....
« on: November 25, 2011, 07:11:41 PM »
i have a wasr and noticed today that some of my mags are a little sticky and one wont go in. then i have some that are very smooth going in but wiggle a bit. my question is if i open the mag well to accept all my mags, am i gonna have some that wobble real bad or do the edges have nothing to do with the mags  wiggling? i know the 75 round drums wiggle but gosh all the weight i expect it. any help is great. oh they are eastern block steel mags.

its easier to just file a bit here and there on the mags til they go in smoothly.

the magwell on my WASR is nice and tight and im keeping it that way. i routinely have to file 80% of new mags i get. takes about 2 minutes on each mag and your not really taking much off either... just a paper thin shave here and ther is about all it takes.

sometimes just a buffing wheel on a dremel will do the job.

its just the forward sides where it narrows. i wasnt too sure about carving the mags but i guess that makes sense cuz that area on the mags that are smooth are like bare metal

Are they all steel, or are the "sticky" ones polymer?

A little mag wobble is pretty common in the WASRS ( both of mine have a little) but as long as the function is not affected it is not a problem; If you have steel mags that fit well, but with a little wobble, then I would stick with those; if you open the well up more to accommodate the mags that don't fit , you will increase the wobble for the ones that work now.....shave the mags if you want.

But the rifle,  I'd leave it like it is.

My wasr's magwell has bit of wobble, but mags go in nice and tight.Remember almost each mag even from the same country of origin are slightly different in fitment.I have some mags that have no wobble some have lots.
Even my polytech's have a bit of wobble with certain mags.Trial fit several mags and mark with a dab of paint or crayon on those that fit nice and tight.

try it and see. if not, just go to walmart and a small metal file is only like $7 in the hardware dept.
like someone else said, use a crayon or something to mark where its rubbing and give it half a dozen strokes with the file and try it out and repeat as necessary til it is a smooth fit. once you do a couple, you'll be a pro.

And remember, less is more with this kind of thing; sand/file a LITTLE, try it, sand/file a little more, try it again, etc....

You can always take more metal off, but you can't put it back.....
