Your Dream SKS Mods
« on: February 20, 2012, 01:19:17 PM »
I was taking a look through the Bubba SKS photos and thought that it might be neat to see what sort of modifications or accessories everyone would want to have if they could. This is not just for things that are currently on the market, but for concepts and ideas.

I realize that this could become something of a gag thread, but try to be serious with it. Hopefully this could spawn someones idea getting brought to life. :)

My "dream " SKS would be a really nice, all original, non-refurb Russian.

These rifles, they are pretty good the way they come, and there's not a whole lot of reason to hack them up.

I agree that the SKS is a great gun to begin with. But part of what makes this gun so great is that it is an inexpensive carbine when compared to say an AK or AR. If you want to use the SKS in any carbine match, they will perform well, but simply due to design arent as efficient or easy to use as either of the previously mention platforms in their original configuration. Things like Marcus's mag adapter, detachable mags and aftermarket stocks help to bring a great old gun into a modern market. Also, for the price of decking out a SKS you can only by a basic AR or decent AK. For the person who wants to experiment with gun, there isnt really anything better than the SKS

The thing is, all other things (including the skill of the marksman) being equal, that basic AR-15 in 5.56 will be more accurate out of the box than that tricked out SKS...

So at the end of it, you have about the same money in it, but you will have a less accurate (for target purposes) rifle for competition.....

Why not leave well enough alone?

Or if you are gonna bubba it (I have two bubba's myself, one was a beater, the other a Norinco that I simply swapped the stock on for the purposes of saving the original wood) , try to use previously butchered donor rifles or don't swap anything you can't swap back, and save the good rifles.....

I am far from a purist, my newbie  friend.....

But I see no point to modifying a good classic rifle trying to make it into something it simply is not.

Kinda like this, but with some sort of red dot sight, attached to a rail adapter off the rear sight block.  And an AK mag.

So basically, I should have used an M partatrooper for my build. Oh well.
Norinco SKS, Glock 26, Ruger 10/22, Iver-Johnson Top-Break .32 S&W, Walther P22, Savage NRA Match, Auto-5 12ga, Bul M-5 Goverment 9mm

I really like the looks of the metal hand guards, but from what I've read they have issues with fitting onto the Yugos. Can anyone confirm this?

 1 Romy SKS
 1 T-6 stock
 1 Choate overmoulded pistol grip
1 Choate mount with case deflector
 1 Bushnell Banner 3-9x40
1 Talon extended mag release (Thanks MrCoinring)
1 left hand charging handle (Thanks XTriggerman)
1 Trigger job with Wolff springs
12 USA brand 30 round mags
3000 rounds of brass cased Yugo to feed the beast with

What did you use to make that shell deflector? Did you just tak weld it on? And ditto on the left hand bolt. Already contacted him about it haha.
