Ak Magazine Angle
« on: April 17, 2017, 11:01:23 AM »
Hello Fellas,
I figure someone on this side of the board will know the answer (hopefully).
What is the ideal angle the magazine should seat when locked in the receiver? I guess more importantly, the angle of the bullet before the bolt catches it. Thought I read (regarding
the angle of the bullet), not level, but with a slight angle upwards. Didn't mention any particular angle degree, but just "slight upwards".
Sound about right?

Thanks!

Well., are you asking this as general curiosity, or for an AK build, a bad mag, feeding issues?? It depends.

The mag latch on the trigger guard seats the magazine at the rear tab. Since the front of the cartridge is a smaller diameter it can clear the bullet guide and be guided into the chamber.
Normally the left top area of the magazine feed lip will seat just under and left side ejector rail and this sets the mag height. There is some variation based on the design, wear etc.
An out of spec mag may have bulged or damaged feed lips, a bad follower or other defects that effects feed.

It is kina., a mag feeds or it doesn't. Inspect it for damage, bent feedlips etc.
If multiple mags do not feed then start looking at the other areas like the mag latch etc.

There are specs for some of these measurements., but generally meaningless to the average user and without some specific measuring tools etc.

Thanks for the reply.
I should have provided more info, but the inquiry is for a modification of a SKS to accept Ak mags. I opened the mag well to receive the AK mag, but trying
to establish the angle of the mag to sit. It looks like the front of the lips and the rear tab of the mag dictates the angle.
Depending on what brand of mag I am using to test- one mag sits level, while another sits with a slight angle up.
Just wasn't sure if there was a preferred angle the mag should be sitting at.

It will vary between an AK and a SKS.  There are differences in receiver dimensions, bolt head lugs and magazine lip to chamber face.
The SKS was not designed for a removable magazine though it can be made to reasonably accommodate and feed from one.

It might be more useful to study hoe a TAPCO type magazine aligns in the SKS system and the cartridge heights and so forth.  Or if you have access to a SKS M, D MC5D, type 84 etc.

Yeah, that makes sense. I reached out to a buddy who has an AK, hopefully he can bring it by this weekend so I can study it. From pictures I have seen, online,
the angle of the bullet seems to be at a slight angle upwards, almost even. Hard to tell...
