AK Barrel Pin Options
« on: May 18, 2018, 01:31:39 PM »
In the past, I have used .302 (oversized) barrel pins. I usually drill with a 7mm drill, and then use a reamer to .300. Then press fit the .302 pin.

If I were to use an original barrel pin, which I believe is .277, what size drill and reamer should I use? What have you experiences been with this?

Thanks,
Dale

Size J bits are .277" I'd recommend under sizing it and reaming it out by 2-3% (.271"), which is the standard to leave. A size I (.272") is just about spot on for it, or the next smaller fractional size is 17/64 (.2656"). The reamer would be to size J (.277")

Keep in mind that drills/reamers don't cut exactly straight and usually leave a hole a couple of thou oversize. Like a 1/4" bit leaves a .251-.252" hole. That'll give you plenty to work with.
