In the name of Ben Franklin! necessary home library books
« on: December 11, 2018, 09:57:50 PM »
We all know public libraries are dying off and in the end times, the internet will not be available so what books/ knowledge would you deem worthy of learning or stashing in your home reference library? I would like to limit this to more personal family use and not restarting civilization books.  Topics that come to mind:
canning
tracking
snares/hunting
home chemistry
herbal remedies
edible plants
flanking/tactics

the Fire Fox Series (though I don't have them)
My sis got me a book on edible plants I have yet to locate
This book she also got me which is pretty good:

woodworking, building a log cabin, metal working, several gardening books such as square foot gardening, Ruth Stouts no work gardening book, books on raising cattle, horses, sheep, rabbits, chickens etc.

Also make your own library...what you say?  Several years ago I purchased several large 3 ring binders and started printing out stuff that I found relevant.  Most were short several page pamphlets etc.  I then took them and put them into 3 ring binders.  I believe I have 3 of them if I recall.

Local catastrophe has a better chance of wiping out your paper library than the internet going down any time soon.
If worried get a Tempest rated laptop and drive, store your critical stuff in the cloud and on local digital storage.
Books do make good kindling if dry though.
Solar charge your laptop and read everything at your bug out location.

Only thing about that is if your device dies, and they will die then you're SOL.  Paper back up has been the standard for several hundred years now and will remain the gold standard.  I have everything backed up on multiple storage devices but I also know that they are only good as long as I have something to read them off of and when that ceases to exist then I have nothing.

The Army kept paper records for WW2 vets and lost most of it.
New Orleans lost most of it's official "paper".
How about California?
Redundant digital storage can be taken with you.
Make a digital copy for every member of your 'team'.

The army has also lost tanks, airplanes and nuclear weapons.  Should we put those in the cloud too?  New Orleans did NOT lose most of it's official paper, sorry but I have hundreds of relatives from New Orleans and lived in Louisiana for 33 years.  California...you're talking about fires right?  Well I live in Utah now and we have about a dozen boxes packed up with orange tape that say take in emergency and can be loaded in my suburban in 3 minutes tops....several of the boxes have our photos and papers.....I do this because like Cali we have wildfires.  Just this past summer we had a wildfire less than a mile from our home and had the Suburban and pathfinder loaded in less than 10 minutes. My suburban stays with the back seat out and the middle seat folded down for maximum usable space to load into and it never goes below 3/4 tank of gas, it's also 4WD which lets me go offroad if needed.  During my lifetime my family has been flooded out twice by 8 feet or more of water, survived at least half a dozen hurricanes, survived several mid range earthquakes and I personally have been HIT by tornadoes on 3 separate occasions.  So yeah we are prepared.  As we speak I sit less than 10 feet away from all of my preps which are boxed and ready to be brought upstairs from a single central location which is surrounded by concrete walls to the tune of 8 inches thick on all sides including the roof of the room.  I would like to think I am prepared better than at least 98% of the population in our nation.

Great.
I still like digital storage.
I WILL have a computer to read them.
We have two complete walls of books that will likely stay behind.
A small fireproof safe for some 'official' hardcopies of important stuff and a whole truck load (equivalent) that goes with us.
If we ever had to leave.

Print up an inventory of what is in your boxes so you can find your edible plants book :)

Never thought about water testing, I just have multiple different methods of water purification and don't really worry about water testing.  My bug out location is tied by another river to the Mississippi River and as long as the Mississippi doesn't go totally dry we'll have sufficient water.  You don't even need a well there.  You can take a post hole digger and go down about 3-4 feet then let the hole fill up with water...seriously it's really like that there.

The Foxfire books are great. My wife and I found one at a yard sale and ended up getting the whole series. Lots of practical information and even more really cool oral history. Just skip the parts where they talk about Appalachian dentistry

"The Hand Sculpted House" contains plenty of good info on building homes and other structures with cob, which is a mix of clay soil, coarse sand, and straw. It's a very old method that the authors have tweaked and updated after spending decades building thousands of cob structures. The book covers the whole of construction from foundation to roof, and all of it can be done by just one or two people with few or no power tools. The philosophy of the authors around taking on debt for housing is also very interesting. And the buildings you get can end up looking like something from Lord of the Rings.

Ah, dentistry (shudder) that would be important and better than no dentistry. Maybe. Wow, that structure looks awesome, I’ll have to check that book out. Thanks

If you live in a dry climate like out here in the western US you could get a book or two on building adobe homes.  Native Americans did that and some are still around hundreds of years later.  Unfortunately for me when I move back to Louisiana an adobe home would last about 3 months in the rain down there.

Digitally stored books will be lost. But there will be somebody who will find a way to get a generator going. He will find a DVD player and TV or projector. Then Hollywood will reign once more.

I think your idea of TEMPEST is a little off base.  Maybe you meant rugged?  A TEMPEST rated laptop would prevent hightech agents from eavesdropping on you.  I don't think that will be  a concern when the SHTF.

I think a solid state harddrive will do you wonders for a computer's survivability.  Probably Panasonic's ToughBook lineup would be the best.

I've worked on, in, and tested Tempest/Hemp equipment.

A Tempest hardened computer used in a protected environment can survive.
