My advice for preppers
« on: July 19, 2020, 02:12:29 PM »
Hi. I'm new here but I want to share my experience with you for your benefit.

First, you need a good fire save. If you're poor, build one of brick and line it. Then have door made of steel to secure the room. Or, buy a vintage safe. Mines outlasted my brother's new one.

Second, don't store your ammo in the same safe as your guns or by itself. My brother had a house fire. While the guns survived in the fire safe, the ammo expanded and ruined the safe and the powder/primers/cases were destroyed. Powder was clumped together and rifle powder sparkled like pistol powder. Bury your ammo underground, deep enough to avoid excessive heat. The northeast corner of your house should be the coolest. A basement could  work but I'd still put it underground.

Fire is only one threat to ammo, water is another, and theft is a third..  My advice would be to bury caches made from PVC pipe for long term storage:  Cheap, easy, and secure.  Well it's secure as long as you can keep your mouth shut as to where you buried it.  Some folks bury their caches under a patio made from pavers, decommissioned machinery or cars, shed floor, etc. -- that's helps to find it again when SHTF.

You kind of hit on it right there "as long as you can keep your mouth shut."  It's one of the  reasons I never told my brother about my collection until he was already older.  Kids talk, and they might be good kids who wouldn't do anything about it, but you can bet one of them has an older brother with some delinquent friends who'd overhear it and next thing you know your house is getting targeted.  Adults aren't much better either.

Bury your ammo stash and you might need a SHTF Bugout Backhoe.

Depending on how much ammo you have.  That could be a pretty big hole in the yard.
Dig at night so the neighbors don't see you.

Stash your cache when doing home improvement projects.  If you're already putting in a patio, deck, fence, pole barn, etc. nobody will notice a few extra holes that get filled in.

Better yet, dig a 6'x3' rectangular hole, then wrap all your ammo in a long duffel bag wrapped in plastic sheeting secured with duct tape.  It will work best if you divide a roughly bowling-ball sized portion toward one end separated by a tighter band of tape than the rest of it.  Then put work lights all around while you're burying it (to make sure you have enough light to go by).

If some nosy neighbors happen to see you, they'll never say a word.
