I wouldn't worry too much. I think I know the prison you are talking about. The company I work for installed a lethal electric fence around the perimeter there a few years ago. Touch it once, knocks you down. Touch it twice......you won't touch it a third time.

What if there is a natural disaster and it know out the electricity for a few weeks? Do they have generators to power the electric fences? How long can those generators run for?????

I am sure you know where it is  .

My bro in law is an architect and builds prisons for the gov. We got to tour the level 4 prison he built in Tuscon this last year and trust me. They may get out of their cell, heck maybe even their cell block, but there is a slim to none chance they're getting out of the prison. Those things are amazingly well built. I sure wouldn't want to be locked up in one.

Yep, they got backup power. A tornado, on the other hand, could be a whole different problem.
Most of the prisons we've done can go quite a while on backup power. Not to mention, at the first sign of ANY kind of problem, everyone goes into lockdown.
BTW, Licking and Potosi are pretty stout and would have to be a monster tornado to "let the dogs out".

They're probably safer from that tornado in that prison than 90 percent of the people on the outside...

Wel, lesse, I work in AZ prisons, (Spobow, was that the Fed Pen he worked on?), and I can tell you generator and backup power can last for a while, depending on deisel delivery from central storage. Yes, when the main power goes out, all inmates are totally locked down. If it becomes a SHTF situation, well, the chances of us letting them OUT, is highly unlikely....

I knew they just wouldn't let them out, but other than what I have seen on the Hisorty channel programs about prisons, I don't know all that much. The whole prison idea crossed my mind after seeing the news coverage in New Orleans where they had some armed gaurds moving prisoners through the streets...

I will try and find a picture of it.

Thanks for the responses, at least I can sleep a little better now.

I'm within walking distance of the largest maximum security prison in my state. I'm also worried about getting water since we only have an electric well pump. That's why I've been looking into water collection pointed out by a few people on these boards. To be honest, I'm not as worried about escapees as I am about water and food. I think I can handle unarmed prisoners. Even if they become armed they'll only have a few weapons among them. Most would starve in their cells until help arrived. Let's ask the prisoners in New Orleans how high up on the priority list they think they were once the water subsides. I'm not being inhumane... just thinking ahead.

Interesting you bring it up.  I'm helping run a federal study, and a previous segment of the study included intervieweing a younger cross section of the population, and ended up including some death row inmates.  When we looked at their demographics and statistics, their life expectancy actually turned out to be longer while on death row, than if they were on the outside.

I was under the impression they freed many of the prisoners in NO jails...

I remember they didn't exactly free them, but they had armed guards march them to safety.

If all this is true, then why do we still hear of prison breaks from 'High security' facilities? Just heard of one a couple of months ago.
If TSHTF, you are kidding yourself if you don't think prisons will be broken out of. With that mentality, most of the guards will be gone. Wishful thinking that you won't have abunch of armed felons suddenly running around. (Let's not forget that many have friends outside.)

Exactly, Morg.

Those 'friends' and gang accomplices are just waiting for a good opportunity to spring their kindred.

But, WTF are you guys worried about?! Do you really think that, after a long prison sentence and a dramatic escape, that these guys/gals are going to HANG AROUND FOR A WHILE?!?

Nope. They'd plan on vacating the area soonest and would likely already have rides waiting, courtesy of their 'friends'.
