Rossi R92
« on: November 02, 2023, 02:47:11 PM »
I've been considering a Rossi R92 in .357 mag. to go along with my S&W revolver. I like short, light carbines so I was thinking of getting one with a 16" barrel. I know through the years that Rossi quality has varied quite a bit but I believe the current production rifles are fairly good. I looked at a 20" version at my LGS and the action seemed pretty smooth. The new Ruglins 1894s are nearly twice the price of the Rossi and used Marlins are hard to find. Does anyone here have a fairly new Rossi and what is your opinion and or problems.
Thanks.

Too bad they never made one in 9mm, I'd buy one if they did. I know it is fairly close to .357/.38, but the chamber would need to be quite a bit shorter for sure.

The 16" carbine was the first rifle I ever bought NIB. Earlier this year, a Calgunner had a broken ejector on a 92 lever and sent it to Rossi for the lifetime warranty. The service guys tore it down, then new management wouldn't honor the warranty, told the fella it was "out of spec" but didn't say how, wouldn't sell him an ejector, charged him for teardown and return shipping???!!! He posted a thread about the crappy service and happened to jokingly mention in the posts if anybody wanted to buy a broken Rossi 92, I raised my hand. When he got it back, a service guy slipped in an ejector and collar, no invoice or note. Someone in the shop helped him out. Any way I got the basket case rifle for a hunnerd bucks ;) . Put it back together, runs like a top. 20" octagon barrel, case hardened receiver. I'm going to put a slightly bigger loop and a Marbles Tang on it to make it retro in appearance. PAX.

I had one, killed it with a squib.   :disgust:

Been looking at the stainless gray laminate versions, or maybe a Henry in the Case Color version.

That would be cause for concern right there . . .

They weren't always like that. I picked up an early NIB 4" Rossi .357 at a show about 6 years ago for $125 bucks. It had a broken FP from someone dry firing it with the plastic cylinder protector in upside down. Sent it to Rossi (Tarus) they fixed it for free. Runs like a champ. PAX

It would be hard to imagine an R92 being any worse than the last two Ruger handguns that I purchased.

I've sent guns into Taurus / Rossi for repair as well.  Two points:

1) They always used to just fix them, and now they apparently don't

2) They need fixing.  They seem to need fixing more than my other guns.  So if they no longer "just fix them", this is a reason to stay away.

In all Honesty I'd rather have S&W revolvers and Old Marlins in .357 but now days it's just to $pendy for the top tier bunch. PAX

It would be hard to imagine an R92 being any worse than the last two Ruger handguns that I purchased.

At least with Ruger I've never had an issue with service. My MKIII developed a broken recoil spring guide fairly quick after purchase, I called service , told them I'd save them money and time if they'd send the part. Offered to take a picture and they just sent the assembly free of charge. Never once got burnt by them.

I bought a Rossi .357 carbine. It felt great, shot great, but always jammed on loading the third round. I didn't mess up manipulating the lever.  I had thoroughly cleaned the rifle, worked the lever to break it in, no joy. I tried both .38 specials and .357, several different ammo brands, and several reloading attempts playing with the OAL. Still would jam. I pulled out the action, polished it, but nothing worked. I got stuck with a flawed one.

It broke my heart, and I sold it at a loss with full disclosure of its jamming issues. I'm sure the majority of Rossi's work fine, but I just can never buy one again from them and take the chance. I'd love to get a Marlin or a Winchester, but of course, those are priced at twice or more the price. I greatly envy those of you who got a good one.

I have a Henry in 357 that I got on a trade. I love having same round for carrying both. Plus 357/38 out of the rifle is so light shooting. No real recoil.
