I have an old Mauser M93 that was rebuilt and refinished by a local smith in 7.62x39mm.  It's beautiful, accurate and I love it . . . and it hardly ever comes out of the safe.  My main reason for getting it was as a backup to use the stockpile of 7.62x39 ammo I have.

x30 not being suitable for hunting is very subjective Onepoint. I imagine out in WY, you would be correct as you probably have fairly long distances you shoot from. Here in most of MO and many other parts of the country, Hunting with something in x39 is very handy and plenty accurate. We don't often get shots past 100yds due to wooded areas, etc. My SIL has 80 acres in central MO and about 70 of it is heavily wooded so he rarely even gets to the 100yd mark. (50yds is probably average)
X39 and 30-30 are used quit a bit around here for deer and feral hogs as well as Coyotes. To hunt with a caliber much larger than that means losing meat due to excess exit wound. My first hunt in MO back in the day was with a Mosin using 208gr Brown Bear SP at about 35yds and I lost the entire right front shoulder/leg because the caliber was just too much. Switched to x39 after that and have never been disappointed.

My cousin shot his 1st deer when he was a kid with a M44 in 54R at about 40 yards and had a similar outcome. I shot a small doe with the 124gr S&B soft point two seasons ago from about 30 yards and lost very little which was nice. She jumped about 5 feet in the air,
Kicked like a mule and dropped dead about 25 yards away.

See, this is why rifle companies are not knocking on my door to be director of marketing for them. :)

For me 7.62x39 is just one caliber stockpiled, and most of it isn't suitable for hunting.  A bolt in the caliber is a novelty in use and I have plenty of those already.  If I ran across one stupid cheap it would come home, but its not something I would hunt down.

Besides .22 & X39 I've got a ton of X54 left over from a mess of 91/30s but only have 3 rifles in that caliber. 25 battle packs and 5 crates of X51 for a PSG clone (and a slug of .308 for a Savage 99f) then I ran across a 500-round brick of .270 that a county DMR had, he was changing to something more gouache. He said the SWAT guys were brow beating him over the "hunting" round (good for me though). PAX

Looks like Ruger has a standard American version in 7.62x39 now. Comes with a Raptor Camo stock, 20” barrel, muzzle devise, and it looks like it might take standard AR mags now all for $479.00. The $100.00 back in bonus bucks is still going on as well.

I think they have some misinformation there, either in the detailed description or the pic. That barrel does not look any longer than the Ranch if you pull them up side by side. Unless they are measuring the Flash hider, but it still looks shorter than 20". Beyond that they stuck the AR module in the mag-well and and the camo pattern is cool. I stuck the AR module from my Ranch 5.56 into the x39 Ranch and had feeding issues so I decided to stick with the Ruger mag version. Hope they got any issues worked out on it.

This purchase would definitely be more of a want than a need. As far as using it in a hunt, it either would be fine for many scenarios. Most midsize game could be ethically harvested with x39.  I have reloading components to make better hunting ammunition than most factory stuff.  I like the Mauser because of it's story.   Kind of like my banned weapons of the 90s collection.

So the update is contacting Mauser for a trade for my Ruger PCC 9mm and I have contacted someone else about a different American ranch in 350 legend for $260 and about 45 minutes of travel.  My wife's ar's from primary arms got delayed, so I needed something to do.

Delayed by the supplier or by the DOJ? My KSI Hunter got caught in the Kalis DOJ net for 30 days. Should make bail by Pearl Harbor Day. PAX

Delayed by fed ex shipping routes. Went from TX to Colorado and cought in snow.  So not necessarily fault of gobmt? Yeah just shipping.

Also thinking of jumping on this safe, they're asking $500. I guess I'm hoping on danjal to input on the safe even though the thread is not about it. Lol anyway here's the link....
