Ready and waiting for the new front sight
« on: June 13, 2019, 05:56:17 PM »
I picked up a beater with the front of the barrel pretty much destroyed. It looks like Bubba was attempting to remove the front sight but made a real mess out of it. It was just what i have been looking for and at the right price.

Cut off the damaged part of the barrel back to 16 1/4".

Using one of Dave Manson's Military Crowning Kits I cut the end of the barrel square with his 0 dergree cutter. Then cut the crown with his 11 degree target crown cutter.

Then after the annular cutter to get the barrel diameter down to the correct size i threaded it for the 14 X 1 left hand threads, the .611 is the depth of the threads in the Lantac and now also on the barrel.

I installed one of the Lantac Drakon muzzle brakes and timed the threads for the correct 6 o'clock position of the muzzle brakes top holes.

Swapped out the old beat up stock for a Choate's light weight Sporter.

And now i am waiting on the final touch. A Tech Sight rear and a Bullet Button front. Oh....The waiting is killing me!

Received the new front sight today. Leveled the receiver and then installed and leveled the top of the sight. Both the receiver and top of new front sight show dead nuts level. Sighting down the rifle the new front looks perfectly straight. A prettier picture i have never seen!

Sure you can, use any picture i post with my permission. So i finally got to shoot this rifle today. After about 3 months of work and tracking down small parts the sights were the last thing on the list. I also found out a few things about the rifle today i did not realize. I noticed that the original front sight was pushed as far over to the right as possible. The guy that owned this rifle before i got it had tried to remove the front sight and really screwed the crown and sight sleeve up and that is the reason for cutting the barrel to start with. See the picture below. Notice the hammer marks on the crown, the bent cleaning rod fixture and the split that goes through the underside of the sight.

I guess he did not understand that the front sight and bayonet lug are all on a sleeve. Anyway, after installing the new sight using the leveling of the receiver and the top of the front sight as you looked through the old sight block the front sight seemed to be canted. The front sight was dead nuts straight, the sight block is canted and that's why the sight was pushed over to the far right. Below is the final group i shot today after getting the front sight height correct and without touching the windage adjustment at all.

This is 5 shots off of a rest at 50 yards. The orange square is a 2 X 2. I am a very happy Man today. The Tech sight rear and your front make a perfect pair even for these old eyes.

After running 500 rounds through this rifle i have got to say that your new front sight combined with the Tech-Sight 200 is the most accurate rifle i own at 50 yards. I never thought i would ever say that you could mention accuracy and SKS in the same sentence and this is not the first SKS i have ever owned but this combination which extends the sight radious, even on a 16" barreled version, is simply amazing to me. Every time i shoot a group with this old beat up rifle i cannot believe the results. After doing a trigger job and minimizing the creep and grit this thing is driving tacks at 50. I have many AK's that are built using the most expensive parts available even with FN barrels and optics that won't hang with this rifle at this distance. I have not stretched it out yet to 100 yards and i may get dissapointed. I sighted this gun in at 50 because where i live that is about the fartherest distance you would ever get to make a shot on any kind of game or pest and it will stack rounds almost through the same hole all day long. The design of your newer front sight with the allen screw in the top post is genius. I installed the sight using Loctite 648 under the sight where it tightens up around the barrel and the set screws and have tested it with mag dumps to heat the barrel and it is rock solid. Thank you for the time and effort put into an amazing product which is ever so elusive in todays world. I got what i paid for and much more.
With the light weight Choates stock, short barrel and the Lantac Drakon muzzle brake, which by the way results in almost zero recoil up or to the shoulder this has become my favorite do anything rifle. I don't know if you have ever tried one of these muzzle brakes but they are equally amazing. They are expensive but again, you get what you paid for and much more.
