What should I buy?
« on: May 16, 2021, 01:00:23 PM »
Recently sold a couple shooter grade rifles and I am considering what to buy. Locally several Albanian sks rifles are for sale. Prices running depending on gun shop, year and condition from a low of $825 up to 1k. Or I have been thinking about a sks Sporter with a thumbhole stock or lastly a "paratrooper" any ideas?

Para are handy if you're looking for a shooter, Albanians are probably better for a collector piece, depending on quality.

If AKs are available in your area, you might think about one of those instead of an SKS "sporter".  Recent import WASRs and ZPAPs are nice rifles.  A good condition Albanian should be a good investment.  If you're looking for a shooter SKS, then maybe a Chinese.

As always, price and condition are everything.

I haven't set out to collect sks rifles. But I have squired a few over the years. I do have a beater shooter, a Romanian, a couple early Chinese and a 78 Albanian.
I guess I was thinking of another Albanian from the perspective that they will probably only go up and they are not rare but somewhat scarce and I have the opportunity now and down the road it might not be there. Oh well. Stuff to think on

I have always put the Albanian squarely in the "rare" category. If you cannot go to Gunbroker on any given day and buy one, I consider that rare.

As to what you should buy, I'd buy the Paratrooper or the Sporter. Great shoters.

Update. The sporters I was watching went for a little more than I wanted to pay. So I bought a 70 Albanian today. $770 out the door. I would post a picture but I can't seem to get the file size small enough

Thats a great price. The last Albi I sold was three years ago for about that.

Battle position???
The rear sight is an open notch type which is adjustable for elevation from 100 meters to 1000 meters(110-1100 yards). There is also an all purpose "battle" setting on the sight ladder, set for 300 meters(330 yards). This is attained by moving the elevation slide to the rear of the ladder as far as it will go.

No it's not in the battle position. I had to double check that.

Sounds like your front post is a little low which is causing you to shoot high. Just in case you're not that versed in the x39 ballistics, generic POI for 7.62x39, with the rear sight in the 100M position and POA at bullseye, is 1" low around 25M zero around 42M, 1" high around 75M, and zero again at 100M.
